Travel Toys for Flights with Toddlers

Updated April 2026 · By Trystan Barnes

Bottom Line Up Front

A flight with a toddler is a war of attention. The only strategy that consistently works: new or long-hidden toys, introduced in timed bursts. Not a Nintendo Switch at hour one. This guide covers what actually works, by age.

The core strategy: new-surprise rotation

Buy or rent a stack of small new toys. Introduce them one at a time, spaced every 20–30 minutes. The novelty buys time; the pacing extends the novelty.

Wrap each one in paper for the unwrap moment. Unwrapping adds 3–5 minutes before the toy itself starts working.

By age

6–12 months

Teethers, cloth books, a small mirror, a stacking cup. Bring more diapers than you think. Breastfeeding / bottle during takeoff and landing to equalize ear pressure.

12–24 months

Reusable sticker books, small cars, a finger puppet, spiral-bound board books, small chunky puzzles.

2–4 years

Window clings, Magnatiles (small travel set), Play-Doh (solid), washable markers + paper, wikki stix, toy animals.

4–6 years

Travel games, card games (Uno), activity books, audiobook with headphones, small Lego set.

The flight-bag survival kit

  1. Double the snacks you think you need. (Fruit pouches, crackers, cheese sticks, raisins.)
  2. Extra clothes for kid AND for you (vomit, leaks).
  3. Wipes, way more than you need.
  4. Pacifiers if your kid uses one.
  5. A small pillow or stuffed animal for sleep.
  6. Medicine (Tylenol, teething gel) just in case.
  7. Noise-canceling kid headphones.
  8. A downloaded show or two as the emergency brake.
  9. Your phone charger + battery pack.
  10. Empty ziplocks for trash, wet clothes, and diaper bombs.

What NOT to bring

Vacation-rental toy drop

If you're flying into St. George, Hurricane, Mesquite, or anywhere in Southern Utah, ToyDash can drop a curated toy set at your vacation rental before you arrive and pick up when you leave. No toys in your suitcase, no new purchases. See our tourist page for details.

Frequently asked questions

How many toys should I pack?

One surprise per ~30 minutes of flight, plus 2–3 back-ups.

Should I use screens?

Save screens for hour 3+. Using them first means nothing left in the tank when you need it.

Best travel toy for a 2-year-old?

Reusable sticker books. They absorb 30–45 minutes at a stretch.

Do I need a CARES harness?

For kids 22–44 lbs, yes. Highly recommended for safety.
